As part of the exhibition Colours of K’gari – A Natural Palette, join local artist Kerri Dixon for a hands‑on workshop where you’ll learn how to draw a realistic dingo eye using soft pastels. Explore techniques in observation, layering, and detail to achieve lifelike realism.

Level: For adults, suitable for beginners and those with some drawing experience. This workshop is designed to be calm, focused and immersive offering participants the unique opportunity to create art within the exhibition while receiving hands-on instruction and personalised support.

Workshop brief

Introduction & Context (approx. 30 minutes)

  • Brief introduction to soft pastels: what they are, how they behave, and why they are effective for realism
  • Discussion of observation, value, and why eyes are such a powerful focal point in wildlife art
  • Overview of the step-by-step process participants will follow

Guided Practical Session (approx. 3 hours)

  • Step-by-step demonstration of drawing a realistic dingo eye
  • Participants work at their own pace while following the process
  • Focus on:
    • Understanding eye structure
    • Building layers with soft pastels
    • Creating depth, contrast, and texture
    • Tips and techniques for achieving realism
  • One-on-One Support
    • Kerri will move around the room offering individual guidance, corrections, and encouragement throughout the session.
  • Morning Tea Break
    • A short break midway through the workshop.
